"It just felt a little more sincere somehow, even if I was going to be referencing my own name in the title," he explains. Although The Pop Underground EP was released under his name only, it was a collaborative effort with songwriter/producer Mark Williams and producer Tony Hoffer, the latter known for his work with Beck, Phoenix, and Foster the People.įor his full-length effort, which features collaborations with onetime Candy Butchers frontman Mike Viola and others, McMahon decided on the moniker Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. "It's tricky when there are some many people involved with the making of each record who are such a big part of it," he explains. While McMahon felt it was time to release music under his own name, he found he wasn't completely comfortable with it.

"I think the just the circumstances surrounding the release of that record - getting sick and sort of entering the recovery process - it strung that concept out over three records. "Jack's was always a conceptual project and I really only intended to put out one record," McMahon explains. After putting Jack's to bed with a pair of final shows in 2012, documented on the CD/DVD Live From the El Rey Theatre, McMahon reemerged under his own name with The Pop Underground EP in 2013, and last month Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness released their self-titled full-length debut.
